STORYTIME

Where Language Comes to Life

At The Sekar School, we believe that learning a second language shouldn’t feel like a chore. Our Storytime program offers a stress-free, immersive English experience designed specifically for children aged 4 to 15. We move away from boring grammar drills and move toward the magic of storytelling.

The Science Behind the Magic

Why do we use stories? We base our methodology on the Input Hypothesis by world-renowned linguist Dr. Stephen Krashen.

Research consistently shows that children do not “learn” a language through rules; they “acquire” it through meaningful messages they understand. Here is why Storytime works:

  • Natural Acquisition: According to the Natural Approach, listening to stories provides “Comprehensible Input.” Children pick up vocabulary and sentence structures intuitively, much like they did with their first language.
  • Lowering the “Affective Filter”: Research proves that anxiety blocks learning. Storytime creates a high-interest, low-stress environment. When children are engaged in a tale, their “filter” stays low, allowing the language to flow directly into their long-term memory.
  • Contextual Learning: Instead of memorizing isolated words, children hear English in a living context. A study published in the Journal of Child Language suggests that the narrative structure of stories helps children predict what comes next, significantly boosting their listening comprehension and word retention.

What We Offer

  • Ages 4-7 (The Explorers): High-engagement picture books, puppets, and rhythmic tales to build a foundation of sounds and basic vocabulary.
  • Ages 8-12 (The Adventurers): Interactive narratives and folk tales that encourage students to participate and begin expressing their own thoughts in English.
  • Ages 13-15 (The Thinkers): Complex stories, short novels, and contemporary narratives that spark critical thinking and advanced conversational skills.

Our Promise

We don’t just teach English; we cultivate a love for the language. By Cultivating Brilliance and Fostering Equality, we ensure every child—regardless of their starting level—finds their voice through the power of a great story.
