Describing People

Figure out this conversation below:

Sam  : Who is your boss?

Eva   : I think you don’t know him. I’ll describe him to you

Sam  : What does he look like?

Eva   : He is an American. He is tall. His face is round.

His nose is sharp. He wears glasess

He is of medium height. He’s got short, curly brown hair, a moustache and a beard

He has a broad shoulders

He is wearing a long sleeved shirt and jeans/trousers

Sam  : How old is he?

Eva   : I think, he is middle aged.

Sam  : Is he a good boss?

Eva   : I think so, and he is a smart man, also.

Some important phrases:

  1. Complexion (the natural colour or appearance of the skin on your face)

She has a fair complexion.

Dark (gelap), fair (terang), black (hitam), red (merah), oriental (oriental), pale (pucat), ruddy (merah muda dan sehat), smooth (halus).

  1. Age

Old (tua), young (muda), middle-aged (setengah baya), elderly (lanjut usia), a teenager (seorang remaja), in one’s twenties (berusia duapuluhan).

  1. Height

She is of average height.

Short (pendek), tall (tinggi), of average /medium height (rata-rata/sedang tingginya).

  1. Figure

She has a slim figure

Small (kecil), tiny (mungil), big (besar), stocky (tegap), muscular (berotot), skinny (kerempeng), slim (langsing), slender (ramping), plump (montok), fat (gemuk), obese (gendut), of average /slim build (berukuran sedang/langsing), well built (bertubuh bagus)

Slim= langsing dan menarik. E.g.: She is a slim woman

Slender= langsing dan anggun. E.g.: She is a slender woman

Skinny (informal)= terlalu kurus. E.g.: She is a skinny girl

Anorexic = sangat kurus sehingga kelihatan tidak sehat; E.g.: He looks anorexic

Emaciated = sangat kurus karena kekurangan  makan atau sedang sakit; E.g: They are emaciated refugees

Trim= kurus atletis karena berhati-hati dalam memilih makanan dan selalu berolahraga; E.g.: He has a trim figure

Gaunt = sangat kurus sampai tulang-tulang tubuh kelihatan. E.g.: Her face is gaunt.

Bony = sangat kurus sampai tulang-tulang tubuh kelihatan; E.g.: He has bony arms.

  1. Hair

She has wavy straight hair.

Wavy (berombak), long (panjang), short (pendek), curly (keriting), shoulder-length (sebahu), black (hitam), blond(e)(perempuan)/blond(laki-laki) (pirang), grey (abu-abu), straight(lurus), permed (dikeriting)

  1. Looks (paras/tampang)

Example: She looks very pretty wearing that gown.

Beautiful (cantik), pretty (manis), sweet (manis), charming (mempesona), tempting (menggoda), sexy (seksi), attractive(menarik), ugly (jelek), cute (cantik, mungil,  menarik), cool (sangat cantik,ganteng)

Beberapa kata yang digunakan untuk menyatakan cantik:

Attractive = menarik, digunakan untuk menggambarkan pria/wanita yang membuat lawan jenisnya tertarik

Good looking = digunakan untuk menggambarkan seseorang yang enak dipandang. Biasanya digunakan untuk menggambarkan pria (lebih sering digunakan daripada handsome)

Handsome = tampan, digunakan untuk menggambarkan pria yang enak dipandang

Pretty = manis, digunakan untuk menggambarkan wanita muda yang berwajah manis

Gorgeous = sangat cantik, digunakan untuk menggambarkan wanita yang sangat cantik, termasuk wajah dan pakaiannya

Striking = cantik dan special, digunakan untuk menggambarkan seseorang yang cantik dan menarik di mana kecantikannya unik

Cute = cantik, mungil,menarik. Digunakan untuk menggambarkan anak-anak yang enak dipandang dan berkelakuan sangat menyenangkan.

  1. Face

Example: He is a baby faced man. I like him.

Round (bulat), oval ( oval), long (panjang), baby-faced(berwajah bayi), angular (lancip), oblong (persegi empat)

  1. Eyes

Example: She comes from Japan, so she has slanted eyes.

Small (kecil), big (besar), crossed-eyes (mata juling), slanted (sipit)

  1. Nose

Example: She has a sharp nose.

A flat/pug nose (hidung pesek), a sharp/pointed nose/turned up/up-turned nose (hidung mancung), a small/tiny/big/stubby nose (hidung yang kecil/sangat kecil/besar/kecil dan tebal)

  1. Ears

Example: Her ears are big.

Big (besar), small ( kecil)

  1. Shoulders

Example : He has a broad shoulders.

Broad (lebar). Narrow (sempit)

  1. Cheeks

Example : The baby has a cubby cheeks.

Chubby (montok), pimpled (berjerawat), freckled (berbintik-bintik)

  1. Legs

Example: The model has a slender legs.

Slender (langsing), chubby (montok), long (panjang), short (pendek)

  1. Other description :

A thick  moustache (kumis tebal), sideburns (cambang), freckles (bintik-bintik di muka), a birthmark (tanda lahir), a mole (tahi lalat), a pony tail (rambut ekor kuda), near-sighted (rabun jauh), far-sighted (rabun dekat), dimple (lesung pipi),
